Paper has been one of the most ubiquitous materials to date; tactile, accessible, discarded, and commodified. The same can be said for the body. In this series of work, drawing these connections materials, content, and form; I am unifying paper and flesh. Objectifying and abstracting the body to the point of abjection, these pieces vary from literal translations (body casts) to figurative representations (skin-like quality) to pieces that supersede the flesh (of the body – for the body [wearables]). When combined, the work creates an alluring display of ceremonial objects and votive offerings that pull from the history of reliquaries, memento mori mourning jewelry, and ancient grave goods. When presented in the sterile, white cube the minimal, neutral color pallet becomes luminescent, increasing the religious undertones. At its core, this work grapples with personal identity, memory, and loss.
